                         LITERACY IN A CHANGING WORLD

Welcome students, teachers, and parents!  This is the All Saints Catholic High School Literacy website.  This site is designed to help you review and practice literacy strategies for the upcoming grade 10 EQAO test (March 31, 2011).

Why Literacy?

Literacy is much more than just reading and writing — it is about how we communicate in society and how we prepare for a changing world. Literacy is at the heart of learning!

Supporting literacy means ensuring that our children have the necessary skills and knowledge to fully participate in their workplace, in their community, and in society. Literacy enables a person to exercise his or her right to participate in the workforce, in governance, to affect decision-making, and to make one's voice heard.

Literacy encompasses the basic skills people need to achieve their goals, to function and thrive in the modern economy, and to develop their knowledge and potential - the ability to understand and employ printed information in daily activities, at home, at work and in the community.

                                                                            Technology  and Literacy

"Literacy on the Internet"-Reading Comprehension on the Internet:Expanding our understanding of reading comprehension to encompass new literacies." by Julia Coiro

"Proficiency in the new literacies of the internet will become essential to our students' literacy future" (IRA,2001)

"Traditional definitions of reading, writing, and viewing, and traditional definitions of best practice instruction-derived from a long tradition of book and other print media-will be insufficient." (IRA,2001)

Online texts require us:

  • to develop a new concept of literacy including ability to learn, comprehend, and interact with technology in a meaningful way
  • to accept that people have a new purpose for reading
  • to interact with information that may confuse people
